  • No its not legal..

For anyone whos ever even seen a football game, the ref has to blow thwe whistle before each play begins for the ball to be "live" A play cant start until after the ref makes it a live ball, by blowing his whistle. I hope that ref rememberd that, and the coach is a moron for not knowing it.

  • Perfectly legal...

The ref probably blew the whistle before the video starts as the kids are lining up. As a football official, I can tell you the snap does NOT have to go through the legs of the center. The play is perfectly legal. I'm sure the coach told the refs to watch for this trick play before the game started. They are in perfect position the whole time. If it wasn't legal they would have blown it dead.

  • Realistically though...

shouldn't the refs have blown the play dead as soon as the QB moved toward the sideline?

  • TOTALLY legal!

As MrX says the players are already lined up so chances are the whistles already blown... in fact if you listen VERY CLOSELY at the very beginning I think you can even hear it. No the ref shouldnt have blown the play dead.... he knew both the ball and the play was live and there was NO REASON to do so. The fact that the other team/coach fell for it is what surprises me

  • Yes it is legal

Granted we're taking on faith that the ref whistled the play live, but It's not a stretch as the one in the picture was watching the quarterback carefully, probably also watching the clock for a delay of game since they did not call a time out. The ref's get points for understanding that they should not whistle the ball dead until either time runs out and a delay of game is called, or the ball is downed somehow. Extra points for all the offensive kids keeping their feet planted too. They actually could move once the quarterback has the ball, but keeping their feet rooted kept the defense wondering. Great trick. Only works once, but awesome trick. I imagine in college or pro ball the defense would have put tried to knock him back about 30 yards the moment he stood up with the ball and hadn't called a time out.

  • although now that I think of it..

Once the quarterback has the ball the play is live so there would be no delay of game... meh, it's late and my brain is fuzzy :P
