Colin Powell denies advising a fellow former Secretary of State to use a private server for emails.
Powell told People magazine that he believes the Hillary Clinton campaign is trying to blame him for the scandal that has become a target of the Republican Party in her bid for the White House.
"Her people have been trying to pin it on me," Powell said while attending the Apollo in the Hamptons gala Saturday.
"The truth is she was using (the server) for a year before I sent her a memo telling her what I did."
The New York Times reports Powell said he sent a memo to Clinton when she was Secretary of State, telling her he used a private email address for unclassified messages while he served former President George W. Bush. It "vastly improved communications within the state department," he told the newspaper.
