An anti-Trump protester in Portland — one of thousands who turned out in several cities nationwide Friday night and early Saturday — was shot and injured during a confrontation on a Willamette River Bridge, according to police.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries as police sought a male suspect, who apparently fled in his vehicle.

The march by hundreds through the city, some disrupting traffic and spray-painting graffiti, was one of several protests in major cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., and Nashville in the wake of the election of Donald Trump as president. Small protests also were held in Detroit; Minneapolis; Kansas City, Missouri; Olympia, Washington and Iowa City.

The demonstrations in Portland began as a peaceful rally at City Hall on Friday afternoon only to be stopped by police after protesters reportedly split into groups and vandalized parts of the city.

Through the night, flash bangs and tear gas were used to disperse protesters. Police advised the crowd that their gathering was considered an unlawful assembly and they were subject to arrest.

The shooting on Portland's Morrison bridge broke out following a confrontation between a man in a vehicle and a demonstrator, police said. It wasn't clear whether the dispute stemmed from politics.

"The suspect got out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots injuring the victim," police said in a statement. The victim, according to one witness, was shot in the leg, reports.
